“Climate change is having an increasing impact worldwide. The polar regions of our planet are important indicators of climate change because they both reflect and compel changes throughout the globe. The landscapes of snow and ice are continuously melting and opening up, allowing and inspiring scientific research – research that is going further and deeper than ever before. The International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has named March 2007 to March 2009 International Polar Years, a program gathering Arctic and Antarctic research from scientists all over the world.”
