Having grown up in the Sydney Mines area, interdisciplinary artist Shannon Donovan is fascinated by remnants of the former industrial areas, the associated stories and the potential loss of knowledge with passing generations. In How It Is, How It Was, her exhibition of photography at the Corridor Gallery, Donovan explores these sites of industry and documents their return to nature. Donovan states:
How It Is, How It Was is a series of still photographs documenting former industrial areas within Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Where a thriving steel plant once stood, children meander through remains of brick and stone. An exploration of the region’s history and urban morphology is juxtaposed with the natural environment in an attempt to provide an emotional connection to the landscape and capture hidden perspectives of their fading significance.

Shannon Donovan is a multidisciplinary artist working in the areas of photography, installation, mixed media and painting. Her work typically involves concepts of time, history and mortality. She has exhibited in Halifax, Prince Edward Island and Toronto and her work may be found in private collections nationally. She received a diploma in photography from Holland College and a BFA from NSCAD University. She has worked in cities across Canada and currently resides in Nova Scotia.

Located inside the Visual Arts Nova Scotia office at the Halifax Seaport since 2000, the Corridor Gallery is complimented by a historical legacy of Nova Scotia culture, simple yet modern architectural elements and an array of current cultural activity in the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia office. The Corridor Gallery is located at 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia, a city situated on unceded Mi’kmaq territory, and is open Monday through Friday, 9:30am – 5pm.
