Visual Arts Nova Scotia’s Annual General Meeting is Saturday, June 22, 2019 at the New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation, 37 Nepean Street, Sydney, NS.

There will be a free workshop on Entrepreneurship for Artists from 10am – 12pm (in Suite 205 at the New Dawn Centre, accessible only by stairs) given by our Board President Kelly Markovich, who has taught Entrepreneurship at NSCAD University.

There will be a light lunch at noon followed by the short meeting at 1pm (in Suite 205 at the New Dawn Centre). Come see what VANS has been up to and meet our new Board Members!

As a bonus, after the AGM we will take a short, private tour of the newly renovated art studios and spaces at The Convent! If you are interested in taking the tour please remember to wear or bring closed toed shoes, as areas are still under construction. We have also added a bonus tour of the Mythologies & Truisms exhibition at the newly renovated Cape Breton University Art Gallery, 1250 Grand Lake Rd after the Convent tour.

The VANS office will be closed Friday, June 21 as we make our way up to Cape Breton.


Entrepreneurship for Artists

This free workshop will focus on artists interested in entrepreneurship and the possibilities of turning their art practice into a business or career path. The topics that will be discussed are: Think like an entrepreneur – How to conceive an art based business; First steps – Test your market, perform market research and receive feedback; and Be prepared – Understand the importance of a business plan.

Instructor Kelly Markovich is a practicing artist and entrepreneur whose work encompasses photography, painting, screen-printing, letterpress, and upholstery. Her work has been exhibited in cities across Canada and in the USA. Kelly occasionally instructs courses at NSCAD University and NSCAD University School of Extended Studies. She is an active member of the NSCAD University Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Letterpress Gang at the Dawson Print Shop. Kelly was the curator for the 2015 NSCAD University Alumni Association Exhibition “I AM NSCAD”. She has recently taught entrepreneurship to emerging artists at NSCAD, NSCC, and VANS.

VANS AGM Lunch Menu:

Please choose one of the lunch options below and email them with your RSVP. Any of these sandwiches can be done as a salad, just let us know. 

El Greco:   chicken, feta, egg, tomato, white onion, pickled eggplant, lettuce & mayo on a swiss panini.

Randy-John Chicken Salad:  chicken, sun dried tomato, celery, lettuce, mayo and vinaigrette on a bianco bun.

Balthus:  bocconcini, tomato, oregano, green onion/parsley mix, coarse salt, pesto, balsamic reduction & olive oil on a swiss panini.

Ham and Cheese Classic:  ham, old cheddar, tomato, lettuce, dijon & mayo on a bianco bun.

Turkey Classic:  smoked turkey, swiss cheese, roasted red pepper, lettuce & mayo on a bianco bun.

Tuna Melt Sandwich:  Tuna, mozza, green olives, egg, green onion, capers, mayo, sliced sour dough bread grilled on the sandwich press.

Monster Grilled Cheese:  cheddar, provolone, cream cheese & parmesan, sliced sour dough bread grilled on the sandwich press.

There will be water, coffee & tea.  Also sweets following lunch. Sandwiches/salads from No Quarter Deli, sweets from Doktor Luke’s, coffee from Better Bite.
