Apply for the Mentorship Program

The VANS Mentorship Program pairs emerging artists with established artists to take part in a ten-month mentorship from September to June. Focusing on supporting the goals and ambitions of emerging artists throughout the province, mentors may be asked to provide support in any one or more of the following areas: proposal development for exhibitions, grant writing assistance, artist statement development, technical advice, critiques, thematic development, networking, and budgeting. Over the course of the program, mentors will meet with mentees individually at least once a month, and additionally four times as a group, with the program culminating in a group exhibition.

Acknowledging the lack of diversity in our Mentorship Program in the past, we will give special consideration to artists who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) as well as artists from rural areas of Nova Scotia.

*What I learned this* [pandemic] year about being an artist was how to be flexible, a transferrable skill to all aspects of life. Frances challenged me to try things that were unfamiliar, uncomfortable, with no guarantee of success. I worked with new materials (silk, polyester, lace) and worked in a new medium (animation). The program exceeded my expectations. Frances’ wisdom, acquired from so many different experiences, was a well to draw from. Although our artistic media are different, her deep knowledge of textiles in general was very applicable to my practice and advantageous to achieving my goals. Check out the current Mentorship Program’s exhibition Something Completely Different at the Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth. The exhibition runs June 30 to July 25 with an Artist Talk from the mentees on Saturday, July 10 at 2pm over Zoom.

By investing intensely in a few dedicated individuals each year, the Mentorship Program contributes to the overall strength and sustainability of the visual arts community in Nova Scotia.
