In the current exhibition at the Corridor Gallery, established artist Gary Castle presents his recent altered and manipulated photographs, which bring the fragments of dreams into focus. Castle was inspired by author and artist Peter London’s quote, “There is a lovely moment that occurs often as we slide into sleep, at the transitional zone between soggy wakefulness and near sleep. Parades of incomplete images swarm this way and that… When we lose the hold with which self-conscious perception glues us to the physical world, we allow the quality of mind that spontaneously generates imagery to do its work”. See You are innocent when you dream in the Corridor Gallery April 2 -29.

Of the exhibition, Castle says:
I have been, for a very long time, fascinated by dreams. Even before I became obsessed with photography, I had pondered my own and other people’s recollections of dreams. Those recounting their dreams usually recall only fragments. The rest of our dreams lays dormant in our subconscious until somehow activated. Through photography, the buried images in this exhibition have surfaced.

Gary Castle has been a professional photographer/artist since 1968. Graduating with a diploma in Photographic Theory in 1967, he began his photographic career at Dalhousie University as a bio-medical photographer until 1981 when he opened his own custom photo-service lab. He has had numerous one-man shows of his photographic images and his photos have been published extensively in journals and books. His painting/ photo collage works have been included in many group exhibits and, along with his photographs, are in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Art Bank of Nova Scotia as well as private collections.

Located inside the Visual Arts Nova Scotia office at the Halifax Seaport since 2000, the Corridor Gallery is complimented by a historical legacy of Nova Scotia culture, simple yet modern architectural elements and an array of current cultural activity in the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia office. The Corridor Gallery is located at 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia and is open Monday through Friday, 9:30am – 5pm.
