Visual Arts News’ Launch Party!
Visual Arts News invites you to a launch party at the Khyber on Friday, February 1, 7 pm – 9 pm, featuring a set by DJ Swayback. We’re thrilled to be celebrating the much anticipated launch of our new website www.visualartsnews.ca and the Spring 2013 edition of the magazine.
We’re proud to continue providing in-depth coverage of the visual arts in the Atlantic Region, while also featuring extended exhibition listings and online exclusive reviews and audio/video interviews on the new site. This month, visualartsnews.ca features a multi-media interview by independent radio producer Veronica Simmonds with Halifax-based artist Eleanor King. Simmonds chats with King about the artist’s experience being shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award, her recent exhibition, Stacks, at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (until January 27) and her fascination with issues relating to excess, technological obsolescence and environmental degradation.
Artists explore similar themes in our Spring 2013 issue – we feature an assortment of artists who sift through all the junk we wade through everyday, creating monuments to the packrat and throwaway culture. We check out Peter Dykhuis’ Inventories and Micro-mapping – a series of collages on clipboards inspired by the transitory visual information that bombards us each day; we wander through a tower of babble in PEI, constructed by artists Swintak and Don Miller with objects buried in the Confederation Centre’s basement; we let Kai Chan spark our sense of wonder with his breathtakingly beautiful sculptures made from ordinary materials; and we get lost in artist Ehryn Torrell’s colourful depictions of crumbling cityscapes.
To kick off this issue, Visual Arts News‘ launch party will also coincide with the Khyber’s Ahead Of The Now, a new video exhibition featuring works by Zeljka Blaksi?, Laura Dutton, Johanna Heldebro, Lissa Rivera, Sarah Rara, Minna Suoniemi, and Cajsa von Zeipel.
