Emerging artist Rachel Anzalone shows her new minimalist landscape paintings inspired by her travels with friends across the province. In this series, Anzalone is documenting her visits and creating memories linked to these Nova Scotian locations. The Greens Are Breathing was scheduled to be up in the Corridor Gallery March 3 -30, but since the office is closed due to COVID-19, this exhibition currently can not be visited in person. Of her inspiration, Anzalone states:
I am intrigued by color, its intensity along with the landscapes in Nova Scotia. The greens are breathing, illuminating the coast. The blue coves are piercing, sharp as ice. These colors speak, they are plenty. Clouds are compacted together, a dark weight, rather than being light and transparent.

Moving from the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, the region is known for having sand across a bare pine forest. Fires are common and colors burn, flake, and disintegrate. Inside, several shades of brown and tan align one’s eyesight.

I have been traveling with classmates throughout the province. We are creating memories that intertwine with specific Nova Scotian locations. Such reflections are most vivid when revisiting those locations after friends have moved away.

Rachel Anzalone was born in Inwood, NY and grew up in Manahawkin, NJ. She obtained a BFA degree from Stockton University in 2014 and an MFA degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2019. Her work has been featured in the Stockton Art Gallery, the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts Gallery, PhilaMOCA: Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art, Art Mûr, and the Anna Leonowens Gallery. Currently, Anzalone resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Located inside the Visual Arts Nova Scotia office at the Halifax Seaport since 2000, the Corridor Gallery is complimented by a historical legacy of Nova Scotia culture, simple yet modern architectural elements and an array of current cultural activity in the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia office. The Corridor Gallery is located at 1113 Marginal Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia, a city situated on unceded Mi’kmaq territory.
