Paris Salon, VANS Regional Exhibition

Paris Salon
Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) Regional Group Exhibition
February 4-27, 2011

Opening Reception: Thursday, February 3, 7-9 pm

Paris Salon is an exciting mid-winter event to be hosted at the Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing from February 4th to 27th.

This unique art exhibition is fashioned after the original art exhibits of the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France – made famous between 1748 and 1890. The success of these highly-popular Paris exhibits was due in part to their focus of showcasing as much artwork as possible, encouraging the public to experience and to respond to the total immersion in art. With those same goals in mind, this modern incarnation will showcase a variety of work by fifty member artists of VANS representing Dartmouth, Bedford, Sackville, Fall River and surrounding areas. The artwork has been created by emerging, mid-career and established artists working in a cross-section of styles and subject matter.

The salon concept of hanging artwork maximizes wall space, much like pieces in a puzzle, surrounding the visitor with the bold, the beautiful, the surprising, and the provocative. The complimentary or sometimes controversial are hung side by side to encourage response and discussion. Comments are welcomed during this event as a source of invaluable feedback to the artists with a guestbook for that purpose. Paris Salon is also a unique exhibit in that purchased artwork will be removed immediately and replaced with new work by the same artist. In addition, artwork will be refreshed mid-way through the exhibit period, and each Sunday, from 1pm to 3pm, a special artist presentation will take place in the Gallery. Everyone is welcome to attend this very unique VANS Regional Exhibition, and invited to return often for a constantly evolving experience.

Paris Salon was planned and organized by VANS regional representative, Anna Horsnell Wade in partnership with Kim Farmer, gallery coordinator of the Craig Gallery at Alderney Landing and with the support of Visual Arts Nova Scotia.

A special thanks is due to the Craig Gallery for providing the fine venue, encouragement and support to the many local artists in the community.
