Paints Workshop

Geometry & Print Design

with Josephine Clarke

Grade levels:
Teaching Methods:
Artist Location: Cape Breton, Port Hawkesbury
Max # of students: 25, but smaller groups are always welcome.
Timeframe: A 4.5 hour workshop in three sessions. This gives time for students to play with each new technique. It would be offered over three 1.5 hour sessions (total of 4.5 hours)

Students will get to spend each session experimenting a new technique on paper. The final day will be for their pencil cases. Students are also welcome to bring an item from home that they like the pattern of ( Pajama pants, pillow case, piece of wrapping paper, etc) to see if they can recreate it in class.

Students will receive verbal and tactile technique demos, and they will have a written instruction booklet to reference and follow along with as well. I will also go around the class as they work to answer questions and give one on one help.

Session one: Flipped and mirrored repeats.
Class will start with slides of examples from real life, and then a demo of how to make them translate onto a grid. Then a demo of how to do the flipped and mirrored repeats with our stamps on our practice paper. Rest of class is guided creative time

Session two: Inverted and Radial repeats
Class will start with slides of examples from real life, and then a demo of how to make them translate onto a grid. Then a demo of how to do the inverted and radial repeats with our stamps on our practice paper. Rest of class is guided creative time

Session three: Making our final designs on our pencil cases.
Class will start with handing out supplies. Each student will get a blank pencil case, a foam roller, a paintbrush, a portion of fabric ink, and a plastic tray. Then we will do a quick recap of the geometry we learned, via a call and response match game. Students will see slides of past demos, and be asked to identify the repeat type, and raise their hand to answer. Then we will get to work on our final project. Myself and the classroom teacher will go around to give guidance and help.

CLEANUP ( applies to all session models)
For cleanup, students will need to wash off and dry off the stamps and return them to the instructors kits. The students projects must be left to dry for a minimum of 24 hours to let the ink dry. They can then be ironed for the ink to set.

You will need access to sinks for washing, paper towels, scrap paper to protect tables, and an iron.
