(Halifax) – Recent NSCAD University graduate Erin Hollingshead has created a new body of work, which incorporates imagery that delves into the inner child into powerful portraits of adult women. Stuffed animals and classic childhood items add colour and excitement into some pieces, while others portray more child-like body language. I Never Want To Grow Up is at the Corridor Gallery January 4 – 30.

Describing her process and the work on view, Hollingshead explains:

The paintings in my most recent body of work incorporate imagery of the female form mixed with graphics, patterns or flat colour space. Bright colours are usually incorporated because the imagery is meant to be seen as fun and lighthearted. I attempt to capture realism to the best of my ability with colour and form, but do not want to achieve hyper realism – I find that knowing a paint brush made the painting is an important element to the work. In my most recent body of work I have been focusing on incorporating imagery that reminds me of my childhood. Since this imagery is painted with adult females, I am considering it a look into the “inner child.”

Erin Hollingshead most recently graduated with her BFA from NSCAD University in 2016, where she studied painting, printmaking and art history. Prior to NSCAD she attended Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, which is close to her home town of St. Thomas. She continues to create paintings in the Halifax area. Most of Erin’s work consists of realistic portrait paintings done in oils and/or acrylics. The female form is often used, as it is the most relatable form to the painter. Bright colours, flat and/or graphic spaces are often incorporated with the realistic painting style to create a balance between the two applications of paint in her most recent works.
