William Froude
Artist Statement
W. Froude is a self taught artist based in East Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia, originally from Penetanguishene, Ontario. Working primarily in oil, as well as watercolour and ink, he creates landscapes, still life, and figurative works that reflect a deep connection to both nature and industry. Influenced by the Canadian landscape, the quiet beauty of everyday objects, and his work as a millwright at the Halifax Shipyard, Froude’s art is grounded in physicality and emotional depth. His bold use of colour and confident brushwork convey movement and immediacy, while a sense of underlying structure offers balance. Navigating between control and spontaneity, his work reflects the tension between the built and the natural world, offering a unique perspective shaped by craft, labour, and place.
Biography
W. Froude is a self taught artist originally from Penetanguishene, Ontario, now living in East Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia. He works primarily in oil, along with watercolour and ink, creating landscapes, still life, and figurative pieces that explore the relationship between the natural and constructed world. Drawing on his experience as a millwright at the Halifax Shipyard, Froude brings a strong sense of structure and physicality to his work. His paintings are marked by bold colour, expressive brushwork, and a balance between spontaneity and control. His work has been exhibited in group shows across Nova Scotia, and collected privately internationally and domestically.
