Will Cooper

Artist Statement

Life is complex and fast-paced, but it doesn’t have to be. My art is a return to the timeless innocence, simplicity, joy and wonder of childhood, through which I invite the viewer to see the world through rainbow-tinted glasses.

As a Nova Scotian artist, the ocean features prominently in my work, and it is my main source of inspiration. Using acrylics and meticulously cut and sanded pieces of wood, I create dreamworlds full of movement and colour.

Biography

Will Cooper is a self-taught artist based in Nova Scotia. In 2013, he melded his love for drawing and painting with his love for woodwork to develop the wooden mosaics for which he has become known. His technique involves cutting out designs from sheets of plywood, then carefully sanding, painting, varnishing and gluing the pieces back together. The result, a whimsical and quintessentially Maritime style of art with vibrant colours and strong, curving lines, can be found brightening walls in homes and businesses from Halifax to Abu Dhabi. Will is a member of Visual Arts Nova Scotia, Craft Nova Scotia and the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society.
