Sophia Lawrence
Artist Statement
Sophia Lawrence (she/they) is a queer multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and youth-educator living and working in Kjipuktuk, (Halifax). She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University and is currently studying creative writing at Dalhousie University. Sophia works primarily in painting, film, puppetry, and drawing. Her creative pursuits are united by a playful and whimsical spirit with themes of environmental anxiety and queer futurism. Her work is rooted in introspection and humor, with the belief that laughter and play can be powerful tools for processing difficult emotions.
Biography
Sophia Lawrence (she/they) is a queer artist, writer, and youth-educator working in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Non-fiction at the University of Kings College. Sophia is a dedicated arts educator and facilitator, working with organizations such as Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, The MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning, NSCAD Extended Studies, and The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Her teaching philosophy supports risk-taking and experimentation with the believe that creativity is radical action, a tool of resistance, and that the tools and space needed for creative expression should be widely accessible. This belief is reflected in her teaching practice as well as her personal creative projects.
