Silas Wamsley

Artist Statement

My paintings are influenced by the history of Western European religious icon painting, gender crossing saints, science fiction and personal experiences. I explore representations of fabric as an expression of desire and sexuality and incorporate my own symbolic language. My artistic practise supports trans-ness as an endless exploration that cannot be pigeonholed into a specific expression of masculine or feminine. This goes far beyond identification and transcends physical form.

Biography

I am an emerging artist living and working in Kjipuktuk, Halifax. My current studio practice focuses on oil painting. I use my body as a reference for building imaginary worlds and spiritual icons to explore themes of gender, sexuality and spiritual practice. My work is an exploration of trans-ness as an unconditioned space that supports ambiguity, performance, ornamentation and play.
