Sara Lamond

Artist Statement

I'm fascinated by colour and texture, and how the manipulation of these can evoke strong emotions.

I take inspiration from my surroundings, and I love to incorporate scraps of my life and found objects into the work. Ribbons, scraps of paper, orchid petals, a button - all grist for the mill. My work is completed with many layers, each mark a response to the existing canvas. I am wild and messy at the start - purely intuitive and emotional - often I write these thoughts and emotions directly on my canvas. The words become covered up by many layers so I am free to write whatever I want. It’s like a secret journal that only I know is there.

I may have a concept in mind when I begin, but often let the materials lead me, take inspiration from my day, and the work will tell me when it is finished.

Biography

Sara Lamond was born in Cape Breton but “moved away” to Australia in 1999. It was there she began developing skills in photography - a passion since childhood. Traveling throughout eastern Australia, she photographed people and places, but was most drawn to a more abstract style. Sara exhibited in group exhibitions, as well as online international competitions, and received multiple awards for her photographic work.

Seeking something more tactile and visceral, Sara turned to other forms of visual arts, starting with drawing, water colours, and acrylic paintings. In 2019 she began experimenting with mixed media techniques and decided in 2021 to devote herself full time to her art practice. As a self taught artist, Sara spends her time exploring and experimenting - “What if” is a daily question that must be answered.

In 2021, Sara returned home to continue her art practice, with a studio based in Fourchu NS.
