Phil Jourdeuil (Atelier Jourd’Art)

Artist Statement

I paint small (6x6 in) to large (84x108 in) local land and sea scapes and urban scenes mostly in acrylic or watercolour.

I paint to cement memories of cool things I see and places I have been to or would like to visit.

While I work primarily in acrylic or watercolour, I make occasionally forays into pencil/ink, digital art gouache and water mixable oils.

I paint with a limited palette, usually limited to primary cyan, magenta, yellow and white because these allow me to create harmonious paintings that feel more natural. I will use any three primaries that suit the scene.

Most of my work has been smaller (between 6x6 and 16x20 in), but I also do larger work. These include 24x36, 48x72 in paintings and an 84x108in mural.

Art is for sale. I am open to commissions.

Biography

Artist Bio
Phil Jourdeuil is a veteran and self-taught painter. Born in Montreal, Quebec he has lived in six Canadian provinces. He settled in NS on his retirement in 2016 after 41 years of public service.

He comes to painting late in life, having spent over 61 years believing he couldn’t draw a straight line. Thanks to a community art class in 2019 with local artist Heather Hawley, he got the painting bug. A military friend and oil painter dragged him outside for his first plain air experiences in the summer of 2021 and he fell in love. 2024 saw Phil become more serious about his art. Phil paints with the Plein Air Artists HRM and the Halifax Urban Sketchers.

This emerging artist’s art hangs in the homes of friends and family, including several commissioned works. He has sold paintings online and at craft fairs. His work has been shown in group shows in Vancouver, Whistler and the Halifax Area. He participates in plein air festivals in Peggy’s Cove, Bedford and the Hydrostone neighborhood of Halifax. He is a member of the Veterans Artist Collective, the Dartmouth Visual Arts Society and Visual Artists Nova Scotia.

He is open to commissions and collaboration.
