Artist Statement

Inspired by the history of painting, I lean into elements such as Baroque art to examine composition, colour, and the new narratives which develop in my paintings. My recent work continues to explore movement and energy through abstracting figurative elements. The swirling and jubilant energy of the work often sits in contrast to, and questions the violent tone of the historical paintings I am referencing.

Biography

Natasha Verbeke is a Canadian artist currently based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax). She creates abstract oil paintings which are full of energy and movement. Inspired by the history of painting, Verbeke deconstructs and reconfigures her work to develop new narratives. In bringing elements of historical painting into a contemporary landscape, she explores the medium of paint through layers of sheer washes as well as thick, luscious paint application and additionally experiments with the incorporation of other mediums such as charcoal.
