Artist Statement

Matt Marquette -
Painting is how I process the world. As a self-taught artist, my relationship with oil paint has grown from daily repetition and a deep respect for the act of looking. I work in an impressionistic style, drawn to fleeting light, soft edges, and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed. Whether I’m painting a coastal scene, an interior, or an object on a table, I’m trying to hold on to a feeling—something between memory and presence.
My practice is rooted in showing up every day. I paint to better understand color, atmosphere, and form—but also to connect. I’ve hosted paint nights to share that process with others, and I stay engaged with the community through my work at the Halifax Public Library. I believe painting doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. A single brushstroke can carry weight. An ordinary scene can say something honest. Through oil paint, I try to make space for stillness, attention, and beauty in the everyday.
