Artist Statement

I have always had an interest in mark making, for many years envisioned using textiles to emboss paper. After seeing the work of printmaker Betty Goodwin in 2010 I was inspired to explore soft ground etchings with my knitted swatches. I saw the potential to create works that preserve the texture, saying to the viewer the fabric should be revered and documented. Through my explorations I am creating a body of work that uses a variety of printmaking techniques to transfer my knitted swatches to paper. Through collagraphs, and soft ground etchings I have had the most success. Knitting patterns with openwork design and smooth yarn with a visible twist form the matrix. I seek to find ways to collaborate within the textile community and across disciplines, sharing what I have learned, and gaining and knowledge from my fellow printmakers and textile artists to challenge and direct my practice.

Biography

Born in New Brunswick, I moved to Wolfville in 1998, initially working in textiles. In 2010 I began exploring transferring patterns & textures to paper. Over the years I have started & moved on from two satisfying fine craft businesses, a yarn shop, and an architectural concrete business. From 2003-22 I worked with Craft Nova Scotia until my recent departure from my position as Program Director due to the evolution of a genetic condition that impacts my day-to-day mobility & health. I am a juried member of Craft NS and Craft NB for spinning, dyeing, knitting, printmaking & architectural concrete.
