Artist Statement

As an artist living and working in NS for the past 30 years, my familiarity with this region and its inhabitants have allowed an uncontrived social practice to develop; to carry me off into the streets, and open fields. Alongside this, my practice has been expanding into collaborative performance art - working beyond institutional spaces. This new direction has forged pathways for me to navigate social, political and environmental territory locally and nationally.
I reach to coalesce community actions, develop tangible sculptural ideas to mobilize engagement, to learn some new methods of reaching across barriers, to collaborate with individuals and communities (both human and non-human) in new ways. I have found research, interviews and writing with others working in this realm quite helpful to develop my thoughts in this practice.

Biography

Jessica Winton is a sculptor whose material approach has been influenced by her work in the Art Departments of the Film & TV industry. As an advocate for art in the public realm, her work includes gallery exhibitions, unsanctioned interventions, and participatory events while developing critical discussion to support her writing. Her belief in the ability of the arts to support and imagine alternate futures is a driving principle.
