Jessica Berry

Artist Statement

In my art and research, I am currently exploring the role of privilege in our domestic rituals, and the role consumerism plays in our relationship with the objects in our lives.

Having spent several years in the interior design industry, I am very interested in the idea of consumerism and its connection to the relationship between people and the objects in their lives. As industry continues to manufacture and recycle more objects than we can ever utilize or consume, the idea of “hand made” has become synonymous with luxury, and exclusivity, where it was once the reverse. While my work does not reference these ideas directly, they do motivate my approach to making work with a critical eye, and are factored into my studio practice and teachings.

It is my intent that my work find its way into people's lives as a favorite mug, a vase on the table that flowers are switched in and out of, or as a favorite serving tray that is shared around a table in family gatherings. If my work finds its way into an individual or family’s ritual of dining, I consider that the highest complement it can receive.

I work in low fire earthenware clay, underglazes and clear glaze over white slip. Screen-printing, monoprint and hand painting techniques are commonly featured in my wheel thrown, altered and hand built pieces.

When not in the studio, Jessica can be found engaging in her own culinary rituals in her kitchen, or if the sun is out, half—lost in the woods with her family and/or beloved dog.
