Jennifer Bourque

Artist Statement

I am an artist deeply rooted in the intersection of digital photography and fine arts. As I get older, my artistic vision is increasingly shaped by virtues inherent to my distinct cultural heritage. Seemingly empty scenes are imbued with presence meant to trace untold stories and the emotional connections that lie within them. It is not uncommon to look at my images and be both comforted and possibly out of place, as I try to exhume personal narratives that invite viewers to contemplate identity, belonging and the passage of time.

Biography

Nurtured by both my Acadian roots and a diverse artistic education, including studies in fine arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in Halifax, and photography training at Emily Carr University (ECUAD) in Vancouver, my photo-based artwork endeavors to encapsulate the essence of tradition amidst contemporary contexts. I returned to Nova Scotia in 2020 after spending a decade in Vancouver, British Columbia. I am currently a member of le Conseil des Arts de la Baie (Baie Sainte-Marie in Clare NS), and Heritage Trust Nova Scotia.
