Heather Gabriel Smith
Artist Statement
I heard a novelist say once that a place doesn’t really exist until it’s been written about. What I think they meant is that it doesn’t exist in people’s imagination as someplace important and special until it’s been put there by some art form. That is my goal: to illuminate what I see all around me, here in Antigonish: to elevate it in your minds, from something mundane into something valuable. I want you to look twice at ordinary houses and notice the intricate tangled forms of the forest.
