Greg Davies
I am an artist and curator based in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I generally produce paintings and drawings, informed by past styles and historical techniques. The influence of Baroque art and 19th-century modernism is reflected in my treatment of contemporary subject matter, which is largely centered on environmental issues.
In my painting and drawing practice I work with oils, watercolours, graphite, silverpoint, pastels and mixed media on paper. I produce works in series in order to explore my subjects from multiple perspectives. In my work I draw upon historic styles and past modes of representation as a means of presenting and interpreting contemporary subject matter. This impulse stems, in part, from a belief in the sustainability of old styles. The visual references in my paintings and drawings are equally informed by my background in the field of art history.
