Gavin McLellan

Artist Statement

My artistic influences stem from nature and the everyday elements of rural life, connecting these to evoke either a distinct sense of place or time.

I consider composition to be key. To achieve this, the sights and experiences that inspire me must translate structurally and directly into my art, though not necessarily in a literal, replicated manner. Consequently, I focus on a balanced and combined use of line, form, and colour to achieve something expressive, that hopefully resonates; presently I am exploring the use of texture and tone and their interplay with the other elements of my work to intensify such an effect. These latest efforts can can be found on my Cara page, see below.

Biography

Gavin is a Nova Scotia-based artist who enjoys painting still-lifes, landscapes, and seascapes of the Bay of Fundy which he enjoys from his small home studio.
Largely self-taught, his techniques are continually evolving, mainly focussing on bold acrylics using a palette of vibrant hues and intense darks to produce striking, high-contrast pieces. Gavin also experiments with graphite and ink sketching, watercolours, gouache, mixed-media collage as well as digital visual art.

He has attended workshops with Nova Scotia based visual artists Lorna Mulligan and Janice Leonard. He is currently enrolled in an advanced online painting and drawing course with British artist and educator Peter Stanyer for which he received an ARCAC scholarship.

Gavin came to the beautiful Annapolis Valley from Scotland in 2011. For the last six years, he and his wife have enjoyed stunning sea views and sunsets from their home in Port George.
