Carol Hansen

Artist Statement

I am a Fine Arts Printmaking graduate from NSCAD University in Halifax.

I grew up in the suburbs near Johannesburg, South Africa. My travels in Africa and Europe landed me on Nova Scotia’s shores in 1976 on a brilliant fall day.

After graduating from NSCAD in 1983, I moved with my husband and young family to Chester.

Windblown fields, shifting hues of ocean and sky, seasons unfurling, vernacular architecture was the world I painted in pastel, and exhibited for the next twenty-five years.

I began to paint with acrylics during Covid. No interruptions allowed for endless days of painting and 3 solo exhibitions in as many years. The last one, Kinship, included figures in the landscape that spoke of relationships between generations, couples, and friends. I am at a stage of life where memories are outgrowing my time on this planet.

Recent work continues with the figure, exploring new to me materials. I am dropping the reigns of a narrative in favour of allowing the figures to find their own rhythm through space on the canvas.

My work has found homes in Canada, USA, the Caribbean and Europe.
