WORKSHOPS

DOCUMENTING YOUR WORK

Led by Steve Farmer

Tuesday October 28th 6-8pm on Zoom

Register by October 23 at 12pm

How do you show the world your work, on your website, in your portfolio, and when applying for grants? This workshop will show artists how to photograph 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional work using a digital camera, along with a variety of lighting methods including professional and household lighting. The workshop will also provide basic instruction on how to download images from camera to computer, and how to resize images for web applications.

GRANT WRITING

Led by Sally Wolchyn-RaabTuesday

November 3rd 6-8pm on Zoom

Register by October 23 at 12pm

This workshop will help you understand what it takes to write a successful grant application. The instructor will cover the fundamentals of writing a convincing project description (essential when applying for provincial or national funding), explain what jury members look for when adjudicating funding proposals, and discuss writing styles appropriate for writing about your art practice and yourself as an artist. The workshop will use the Canada Council and Arts Nova Scotia applications as specific examples. The workshop will wrap up with a Q & A period.

ARTIST RESIDENCIES

led by Melanie Colosimo

Tuesday November 12th 6 – 8pm on Zoom

Register by November 5 at 12pm

Feeling like you need a creative reboot? This workshop focuses on applying and preparing yourself for artist residencies. Learn about the benefits of local, out of province and international residencies, as well as the differences between structured programs and independent research models. Gain some insight into finding and making residency opportunities. Learn to differentiate between different models. Find ways to fund residencies that charge a fee, and learn to find those that pay. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of several models and workshop ideas for non-traditional approaches. There will also be a brief discussion about a few logistical considerations when attending an artist residency abroad

PRICING YOUR WORK

Led by Stacey Cornelius

Tuesday November 17th 6-8pm on Zoom

Register by November 13 at 12pm

How much should you be paid for your work? What price is the right price? How do you put a price tag on your work without second guessing yourself? In this workshop, you will learn how to calculate prices from a business perspective, and how labour and materials are just one part of the picture. We will explore the factors that affect pricing: where you fit into the marketplace, your target customer, as well as where, and how, you sell your work. There will also be a brief discussion about other types of artist income, such as teaching, and how to deal with inevitable requests to work for little or nothing — and how some of those opportunities can work to your advantage.

Cancellation Policy: Refunds of 75% of workshop fee will be given if cancellation occurs 72 hours or more prior to the beginning of the workshop. No refund will be given after that time has passed.  If VANS cancels the workshop for any reason, registrants will be notified and given a full refund.

* Due to the extreme provincial budget cuts, all workshops will be online as a cost-saving measure, and all MUST have enough people registered to break even.
