Rug Hooking – Old Craft, New Possibilities

Grade levels: , ,
Teaching Methods:
Max # of students: 30
Timeframe: 2, two-hour sessions, 4 hours total
SESSION 1 – Presentation and Project Design
The first session will be a presentation to provide the history of rug hooking, especially in Nova Scotia, and as it relates to the Francophone community.  The presentation can be tailored to have an environmental sustainability, or Nova Scotian heritage focus.
We will review traditional styles, as well as where the craft has evolved to, and alternative applications.
We will talk about materials used (past and present), and the connection to the environmental sustainability movement. I will have in person examples of rugs, materials, rug hooking publications, etc. to serve as inspiration.
I will introduce the concept of the project (Mug Rugs), design tips and tricks, and students will have an opportunity to ask questions. They will then work on drafting their individual designs, and transferring them to the rug hooking backing.
SESSION 2 – Making Mug Rugs
The second session will focus on the students working on their individual projects. I will do a group rug hooking lesson, and then will work with students to get their projects going, and to troubleshoot any difficulties in the learning process. We will also review materials selection.
Following this session I will leave the class with the materials and instructions required to finish their projects.
