Cassandra Stubbington
Artist Statement
In my work I enjoy using bright colors and line work to visually interpret my experiences of certain objects or images. Every conscious being constructs the world around them uniquely due to genetics and evolution. The colours we see come down to survival—they were important to our ancestors and their specific environmental conditions. These conditions have drastically changed and will continue to change along with new technological developments. The infinite ways in which a life form can perceive is an idea that has and continues to inspire me in the creation of my work. I use primarily chalk and oil pastels to create drawings of my surroundings. I use colours intuitively, often revealing hypnotic patterns of swirling fluorescent colours. My goal is to evoke in the viewer a sense of empathy towards nature, by fostering our connection to everything living.
Biography
Casandra Stubbington is a visual artist who works with pastels to create bright psychedelic drawings. Her work explores how color impacts our experience. Raised in rural Nova Scotia, Cassandra was drawn to wildlife and nature from an early age, collecting insects and their moults, fish scales, feathers, and countless other remains left by various wildlife. During her time at NSCAD she became interested in studying how other creatures’ vision has evolved to include certain color receptors. Now she creates work that plays with the color receptors we have in intriguing ways by using bright, saturated and neon colors to realistically render objects and animals. She has received a Bachelor of Fine Art from NSCAD University in 2022, exhibited artwork in Nova Scotia, Ontario and Serbia, and currently lives and works in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Cassandra has been fortunate to receive support from the Nova Scotia Department of Education, and in 2017 she was honoured with the DeGarthe Award.
