Lesley Goodyear

Artist Statement

Lesley Goodyear is a Canadian wildlife painter whose work explores the emotional presence, intelligence, and quiet authority of animals. Her paintings often focus on moments of stillness - particularly maternal bonds and instinctive relationships - where gesture and atmosphere reveal the deep continuity between human and animal experience.

Working in a contemporary representational style, she builds her compositions through strong value structure and controlled colour temperature. She is particularly interested in the interplay of warm and cool light, using atmospheric colour and reflective surfaces to create spatial depth and emotional resonance. Water frequently appears in her work as both a compositional anchor and a symbolic mirror, reinforcing themes of observation and reflection.

Rooted in the Canadian landscape, her work aims to slow the viewer’s gaze and invite a more contemplative encounter with wildlife- not as scenery, but as sentient presence.

She is currently developing a focused body of wildlife work.
