Renée Brazeau
Artist Statement
I consider my practice to be place-based, since I use my experiences of specific places to inform what I create. To me, place is both the physical environment and the community of people existing and gathering within that environment. I gravitate towards imagery such as buildings, interior settings and natural landscapes, in the hopes of capturing the feeling of a specific place. I use walking and daily journal sketching as initial methods of knowledge gathering and documentation.
As a queer white settler, I recognize that my experience of place is rooted in privilege and often limited in its scope of understanding. Community conversation and relationship building is imperative in my practice in order to consider, acknowledge and honour the diverse and intersectional experiences of place.
