Artists Making and Doing, by Making-Do: A Visual Arts Nova Scotia Regional Exhibit

The rugged spirit of Nova Scotias’ resourcefulness is showcased in an upcoming group exhibit featuring 23 Eastern Shore artists, all of which are members of Visual Arts Nova Scotia.

Subtitled “recycle, repurpose, reuse, revisit, reinvent, recreate”, the show opens to the public Saturday, June 11, at 6:00 pm, at the Memory Lane Heritage Village in Lake Charlotte. There will also be a soft-opening on Saturday, June 4^th for the VANS AGM.

“Anybody who lives in Nova Scotia knows that our culture is one of self-sufficiency, “ says exhibit organizer and Eastern Shore artist Julie Adamson Miller. “When the economy gets tough we tend to buckle down and make do with what we have. Artists are the same way.” Miller most recently held the position of Dalhousie Medical School’s artist-in-residence where she used X-Rays to create a translucent shelter.

The show, running until Sunday, July 3^rd, celebrates the tradition of making the best of what’s at hand, both as Nova Scotians and as artists.

“Artists typically don’t have the wherewithal to purchase unlimited materials,” says Miller. “We create with what we find. Artists make and do by making-do. That’s also a rich part of Nova Scotia’s history and our creative perspective, particularly in the fishing villages of the Eastern Shore.”

The work ranges from sculpture and paintings, to works on paper and objects made from used and found materials.  The Exhibition, Make-Do, fittingly hangs in the Memory Lane Heritage Village, a living history visitors’ site recreated from the 1940s and 1950s.
