Barbara M. Schmeisser
Artist Statement
The strength and durability of steel’s modern heritage translates effectively into ironic contrasts and visual metaphors in my work. I also like to play with other conventions such as scale and context. My sculptures are mostly object based and realistic, documenting life passages, cautionary tales, popular culture or a portrayal of a memory or commemoration.
Biography
My full-time art practise as a sculptor began following my time at NSCAD (BFA’05), my participation in the VANS Mentorship Program, and construction of my studio-forge. As a mature, emerging artist I was drawn to the textural and visual qualities of steel and embraced the physical demands, the experimentation and self discovery.
